How to avoid becoming an inbox fossil…

We are so interested in the new & different that we express it in vernacular:

When we greet someone, we say:

“What’s new?”

We don’t say:

“Hey, what’s old? What’s the same as it was the last time I ran into you?”

We just don’t care about what’s old.

And what adorns this industry that’s so old it’s practically fossilised?

(At least its email side.)

Overly-transactional promo emails.

Or – as we called it ‘back in mah day’ – blatant sales pitches.

Like the ones below:

(All real emails were siphoned from my inbox from a few supplement brands whose newsletter I’m on.)

And what gets old, also gets boring.

(What is that #1 marketing sin again?)

Worse:

Not only is it boring, but repulsive – people don’t really respond well to sales pitches being shoved down their throat.

Which is why I NEVER take my work for granted – I am to come up with the most unique, interesting, and entertaining email angle I possibly can…

…every single day.

(We email daily ‘round here – unlike most of this industry.)

And I’ll be completely candid:

It’s difficult at times.

Sometimes the creative juices just aren’t flowing – the muse won’t come….

But then I remember that, while it’s difficult?

So is flipping burgers at McDonald’s.

So is just falling into the middle of the Gaussian curve…

So if I have to pick?

I’ll pick the former.

There are pains of regret and pains of discipline.

I think you’ll find that most successful (business) people you know opt for the second kind.

Luckily for you though:

You need not experience any kind of pain when it comes to your emails…
