I have become email, the destroyer of inboxes…

My girlfriend opens the door to my room: „What are you doing? I’ve been hearing your keyboard clank for hours now.

I jump a little „Oh – nothing i’m just banging out some emails.

Well, how many have you written already?“ she asks.

I’m on my third now“, I reply.

She sighs. „Third? At this rate you’re going to turn INTO an email one day…

You know…

She does have a point.

Sometimes it gets a bit tedious doing so much thinking writing to pump emails out daily…

But then I remember…

It’s one of the BIGGEST (and I’d argue, underrated) competitive advantages any business – big, small, micro or otherwise – can create.

Why?

Well first it starts with the insight that your customers – the ones you’re hoping will buy this week from you – woke up to 14 emails, 21 texts and already saw 9 FB ads from every competitor with a pulse…

They are NOT thinking about you.

They’re thinking about whoever showed up LAST.

If I emailed anything less than daily…

…I’d evaporate from your brain very quickly.

This way, I’m incessantly keeping top-of-mind.

Let me actually draw a parallel with the “Shawshank Redemption

(I’d warn you about spoilers but… It’s a 32-year-old movie – you should have seen it by now.)

One of the ways Andy got funding for the library he managed to build – from scratch – is by writing a letter to the state every week.

After 6 years of writing one letter to the state each week…

…the state finally relents and sends him a bunch of money to build the library he envisions.

But that’s NOT the lesson.

The lesson is when Andy – wanting to get even more funds – says:

I’m going to start writing TWO letters per week now.“

If you don’t see the parallels to email marketing here…

I don’t know what to tell you.

You’re probably in the wrong saloon, dear Sir.
